Often we are asked, “So what do you guys do all winter?”.
It must seem that during the dark and cold months, we have nothing better to do than to take off to warmer climes. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be farther from the truth.
At the close of the 2014 season, it became fairly evident that two of our beloved 911s were starting to show their age. Especially our 1986 (guards’ red) Targa was wheezing and coughing at every turn of the ignition. Although there was no marked loss in power, the motor just didn’t “feel right”. So, in the early weeks of November 2014, we took this little red gem to our master technician and partner Rouven Tomaschko of RTM Motorsport. The diagnosis was not startlingly bad (good compression, some valve play, but smoking like mad).
After weeks of deliberation, we decided to “bite the bullet” and go ahead with a motor rebuild. It seemed like the most prudent choice albeit the most expensive. Because this car is 29 years old this year and has travelled almost half-way to the moon in its lifetime, we decided to go “all out”.

The engine was completely rebuilt by RTM Motorsport over a 2 month period and included everything from the crank upward. As an added benefit, the motor now has a bit more punch and looks really pretty…
It is now ready to go back into the car and, once the roads are clear of snow and salt, we will be gingerly breaking this motor in. We are getting readier for the 2015 season, one day at a time.
